Fine, First Edition Hardcover. Publisher: Candlewick in 1998, 20 pages, 8.75 x 10.5". Pull the tabs, lift the flaps, and delve deep down underground into the world of tunnels, caves, mines, and sewers; of dinosaurs and diamonds, bats and bones, mummies and moles. Discover the oldest tomb, the tallest stalagmite, the deepest hole. Packed with amazing facts, feats, and figures, this book is a 'mine' (pun intended) of information. The level of detail on each page is terrific--and it's design reminds me of the side view of an ant farm. Absolutely the most fascinating thing about this book (in my opinion) is that it gives a unique behind-the-scenes look at how each of the pop-ups works. The pop-ups start out on facing pages, then when you turn the page you see the back sides--the inner workings, if you will--of just HOW the tabs and sliding components are actually constructed. There are also many pointers, and fun/funny facts/comments on these "back" pages.
